Kitchen Spirit is all about choice, from the foods and ingredients we select for our meals, to exercise and taking time for self-care. Our goal is simple: To increase the quality of our lives and positively impact our longevity.
Why did I start Kitchen Spirit?
Several years ago I reluctantly faced the truth: My family’s medical history was stacked against me. My ancestral tree was plagued with a deadly list of health issues—cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol, to name a few.
As more of my loved ones developed health problems, I became concerned about my own future. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t deny it—if I didn’t make some changes and take personal responsibility for my heath, I was destined to follow the same inevitable—and disastrous—path.
My first step was to reject the idea that my future health was in the hands of fate. Determined to find a way to neutralize my family’s legacy, I began searching for organic and natural methods to lose my excess weight, avoid the cholesterol-fighting statin drugs my doctor wanted me to take, and reverse the rapid osteoporosis that had begun to weaken my bones and joints.
My initial efforts were frustrating. While I found lots of information about nutrition and fitness, much of it was convoluted with commercialized agenda and subliminal marketing.
My biggest challenge was separating the truth from what often turned out to be another attempt to sell me a pill, a miracle drink, or an expensive piece of exercise equipment that promised to magically melt away the pounds and restore the energy of my youth.
It took six years of research and plenty of trial-and-error to find what I was looking for. But the results were worth every disappointing dead-end and every frustrating look at the scale . . . because I found a combination of diet and lifestyle that works.
I lost 35 pounds, reversed the rapid bone loss I’d experienced since turning fifty, and brought my cholesterol to within healthy levels without using prescription drugs. And I did it without starving myself or enduring the physical hell of exhausting aerobic sessions or “fat-burning” five-mile walks on a treadmill.
Now my goal is to share what I’ve learned—from my own recipes and methods of preparing healthy and delicious meals, to finding constructive ways to burn more calories and get rid of the extra pounds—without restrictive meal plans, gym memberships, expensive exercise equipment, or personal trainers.
And before we go any further, I want to dispel the common myth that eating healthy also means restricting yourself to boring, tasteless, bland food that leaves you hungry and unsatisfied. (Yeah, my freezer used to be stocked with frozen “reduced calorie” meals, too.) So if you’re worried about controlling your hunger, I want to put your mind at ease. My natural and balanced approach to nutrition provides a tasty and satisfying diet, and includes meal suggestions, cooking tips, and food shopping ideas.
I realize many of you may have tried other programs or diets hoping to lose weight or correct some kind of health issue, and you’re reading this because it didn’t work—at least not in the long-term. First, I’m glad you’re here. It tells me you haven’t given up, and that means a lot to me. Give me the opportunity to help you reach your personal weight and health goals, and I’ll do my very best to provide you with the information and tools you need to re-shape your body, look and feel better, and most important, maintain a healthy lifestyle for years to come.
Finally, I promise you this: If I haven’t tried it, I won’t recommend it.
My suggestions and recommendations are based on what I’ve personally tested and used in my search for the right combination of food and exercise to lose weight, get fit, and improve the overall quality of my life. And don’t let the word “exercise” turn you off. I’ve developed some easy to follow activity plans you can modify to suit your situation, body type, and personal health goals that even the busiest multi-tasker can incorporate into their schedule.
Let’s begin by taking a sneak peek at what I refer to as “The Five Commandments of a Healthy Lifestyle:”
- Start where you are. You’re never too old and you’re never too out-of-shape to turn your life around. In short, it’s not too late!
- Use methods and strategies that work for you personally. There’s a far greater likelihood of sticking with your new Life Plan when it’s manageable for your schedule, and produces results you can see and feel.
- Don’t try to overhaul your life in a single day, week, or month. Making small adjustments in your food choices and fitness options—one day at a time—will not only make the process easier, but will also allow you to build on your successes as you adopt a new way of thinking about your body and your overall health.
- Don’t spend time regretting past mistakes. Dwelling on what might have been is a waste of time. It keeps you from focusing on the changes you want to make today.
- You are in charge of your life. It’s a personal choice—reflected in your eating habits, exercise routines, and self-improvement decisions. The best part? You are the one in charge of making those choices!
